Referrers

Here's a sample of referrers from my site. Most of the referrers on the stats page were like this except the first five. What I don't understand is why I keep getting all these referrers from russian websites?? Were just a local multiple sclerosis organization. Am I being hacked in some way?

referral spam at DuckDuckGo

This is a very helpful script - ZB Block, Protect Your PHP Driven Site from Spam and Hacks | SpambotSecurity.com, it's easy to install and use. I use it on my site and all the sites I'm to blame for. If you decide to use it and have problems, lemme know and I'll try to help.

edit: that script will only work on PHP driven sites.

Basically, they're trying to hitch a ride on your search-engine ranking. From Wikipedia:

The technique involves making repeated web site requests using a fake referrer url that points to the site the spammer wishes to advertise. Sites that publicize their access logs, including referrer statistics, will then end up linking to the spammer's site, which will in turn be indexed by the search engines as they crawl the access logs.

This benefits the spammer because of the free link, and also gives the spammer's site improved search engine ranking due to link-counting algorithms that search engines use.

It doesn't work here, because the access logs and stats on Powweb are not publicly-accessible. The Russian sites work on volume though - yours will not be the only site being targeted!
